Advertisement is not a recent human discovery, but rather it has been around for a very long time. In ancient civilizations, stone carving, wall-painting, and oral noticing were the most common forms of advertising. Egyptian Pharaohs used carved iron plates for public notices. For instance, archaeologists in Thebes, Egypt, discovered a 3000 year old public advertisement that offered a reward for a runaway slave. Old Greeks used wall-paintings to showcase ads about theatrical productions, and papyrus sheets to notify about lost and found items. Romans in the first century A.D. used oral announcements to publicize the arrival of caravan supplies. Also, according to archaeological discovery in Pompeii, Italy, Romans employed written ads to promote property rentals. (1) However, advertisement as a profitable industry did not start until the influx of mass media like printing, radio, television, and the Internet emerged.
